It is Saturday in the middle of January. The weather is so cold my nose hairs got frozen while pumping gas at Speedway. No I did not get the coffee. I have to admit I am tempted to get the 5 dollar foot long at Subways. The cost really fits my budget and you can get a almost fresh sandwich. Suddenly, have you noticed, Quiznos also have 5 dollar specials funny how the parade continues.
Everyone in the business have to have a gimmick. McDonald's is the king of gimmicks with the marketing to the kids, toys in kids meals are big business. Not only in food but in distributing and warehousing and manufacturing. They claim allot of the toys are manufactured here in USA but I doubt it allot, probably from China that way they can afford to give them out. Did you notice there most recent gimmick? Two of them one is McCafe serving fresh ground coffee and the menu is different. Marketing to the grown ups. Second the combo meals 3.33.
This all leads to the casual restaurants taking up arms to fit the giants of the industry. TGI Fridays have lowered some of there prices but also lowered there portions. Lower portions are good since the biggie sizes were making the bellies and hips bigger. Ruby Tuesdays are remodeling there stores to be in the bistro (just another name for cafe) getting away from the 70's look. They too have different specials for 7 dollars you can get the 1000 plus calories in appetizers. I wonder if they added biggie chairs?
OK onto the Kanoe Cafe. A yoga instructor came in yesterday her name is Sue and she said 'This is one of the freshest places to get food good for you." I was proud of that she said it. She has defined what I want this place to be. I look at the garbage can, can tell allot about the food you serve by the garbage, what is not eaten and what is taken away. The Kanoe can lower there trash pick up because people mostly finish all what they purchase. I am proud of the portion and the taste. As the main cook I try to keep everything tasteful and portions reasonable.
So, coming out in February, are coupons one that will shock your socks $5 anything on the menu. That means you could get the soups and sandwich $5.
Ok it is a gimmick but why should the giants have all the fun. After all I feel like a David and Goliath syndrome.
